OUR STORY - The Heart Behind Tsunami Hair

Our Story

Tsunami Hair did not begin in a laboratory, a corporate office, or with a large investment. It began with a name, a personal loss, and a desire to create something better for people with textured hair.

The idea first came to founder Devon Hunt in 2018 while visiting Chiba, Japan. During the trip, an emergency warning appeared with the words “Tsunami Incoming.” At the time, Devon had already been thinking about creating a better pomade for waves—one that could provide hold, moisture, and shine without relying on the heavy petroleum-based ingredients found in many traditional products.

That warning stayed with him. The word Tsunami represented strength, movement, and something powerful enough to make an impact. It became the name behind a brand that would eventually grow far beyond one wave pomade.

Built From Family, Loss, and Purpose

The heart of Tsunami Hair is deeply connected to Devon’s family.

His mother lived with blood cancer beginning in 1999. She was a special education teacher, a six-time stroke survivor, and a two-time COVID survivor. For more than two decades, Devon watched her manage serious health complications, including the long-term use of blood thinners. She passed away in 2021.

Devon also lost his aunt in 2019 after she suffered a stroke during surgery. She had previously survived lymphoma and experienced additional health challenges throughout her life.

Both women represented strength, resilience, and the importance of family. Their experiences also caused Devon to think more seriously about the products used every day in Black households—especially hair products made with harsh chemicals, heavy fillers, and ingredients that many customers could not recognize.

Their passing gave the business a deeper purpose.

Tsunami Hair became more than an idea for selling hair products. It became a way to build something meaningful from grief while creating cleaner, plant-powered options for people who often felt overlooked by the traditional beauty industry.

Starting With About $500

Tsunami Hair was built in Houston with approximately $500.

There were no large investors, major retail contracts, or expensive manufacturing facilities. Products were developed and made in small batches while Devon learned through testing, customer feedback, farmers markets, pop-up events, and direct conversations with people struggling to care for their hair.

The goal was never to create products that simply smelled good or looked attractive on a shelf. Each formula needed to serve a real purpose.

Customers were looking for help with dryness, frizz, buildup, difficult wash days, scalp discomfort, breakage, and hair that did not respond well to traditional products. Parents needed help caring for tender-headed children. Men wanted healthier ways to maintain waves and beards. Women wanted moisture and definition without products that left their hair greasy, stiff, or weighed down.

Those conversations shaped Tsunami Hair.

The brand expanded from its original wave pomade into a complete collection of products for wavy, curly, coily, kinky, loc’d, and textured hair. Today, the collection includes shampoos, deep conditioners, leave-in conditioners, detanglers, botanical scalp care, curl custards, mousse, hair oils, wave pomades, and beard products.

Many of the formulas are built around ingredients such as aloe vera, shea butter, mango butter, rosemary, fenugreek, hibiscus, green tea, and other carefully selected botanical ingredients.

Handmade in Houston

Tsunami Hair remains proudly connected to Houston.

Products are made locally in small batches, allowing the company to focus on quality, freshness, and consistency. The brand was also developed with Houston’s heat and humidity in mind because textured hair needs products that can perform in real-life conditions—not only in controlled demonstrations.

Farmers markets and community events became an important part of the company’s growth. These events gave Devon the opportunity to demonstrate products, answer questions, recommend routines, and listen directly to customers.

That personal connection helped Tsunami Hair grow one relationship at a time.

Instead of simply handing someone a product, the company became known for explaining how to use it, what order to apply it in, and why a customer’s current routine might not be working. That education remains an important part of the brand today.

From Farmers Markets to a Growing Hair-Care Company

What started with approximately $500 has grown into a company that has generated more than $300,000 in sales through online orders, farmers markets, pop-up events, wholesale opportunities, and direct customer support.

However, the company’s growth is not measured only by revenue.

It is also measured by the parents who finally found a routine for their child’s hair, the customers who learned how to properly moisturize their curls, and the people who felt seen by a company created specifically with textured hair in mind.

Tsunami Hair has also supported the Houston community through product education, local events, and contributions to barbering and cosmetology programs. The long-term vision is to create more opportunities for students, future beauty professionals, local workers, content creators, and other small businesses.

Awards, Achievements, and Recognition

As Tsunami Hair continued to grow, the work began receiving recognition beyond its customers and local community.

The company was named Texas Best Hair Care Brand in 2023 and Texas Best Barber Brand in 2023. Tsunami Hair was also selected as an Allstate Main Street Boot Camp grant winner in 2026 and received recognition through the HCC Entrepreneur Program, coming in 2nd place in a pitch competition ,

The brand’s continued progress has also led to national award consideration, including a 2026 Madam C. J. Walker Personal Care Products Council Award nomination and recognition connected to the NAACP and L’Oréal.

These nominations are not presented as completed wins. They are meaningful honors that show how far the company has come—from handmade products sold at local markets to being considered alongside respected names throughout the beauty industry.

Every award and nomination belongs to the customers, supporters, family members, and community that helped Tsunami Hair continue moving forward.

More Than Hair Products

Tsunami Hair was built from family, grief, faith, determination, and the belief that better products could be created for textured hair.

The brand honors the women who inspired its purpose, the customers who trusted it in its earliest days, and the Houston community that allowed it to grow.

The mission remains simple: create effective, plant-powered hair care that helps real people feel more confident about their hair.

Tsunami Hair is still handmade. It is still learning. It is still listening to customers. And it is still growing.

What started as one idea during a trip to Japan has become an award-winning Houston hair-care company with a much larger purpose.

This is not only our business story. It is our family story, our healing story, and the beginning of the legacy we are still building.
